Adrenaline Autosound’s reputation and experience with high-end vehicles like Lamborghini, McLaren, Porsche and Ferrari are well known in Clayton, North Carolina, and the surrounding areas. A client recently brought his 2005 Ferrari F430 to us for a stereo upgrade after the factory door speakers failed. The client auditioned several products in our showroom and chose a set of Focal 165KR2 components and a Focal FD 4.350 amplifier.
Door To Door
The factory door speakers in the F430 are assemblies that mount to the interior door panel. The assembly includes a spacer to prevent the speaker cone from hitting the integrated grille. To mount the woofer from the KR2 set, we machined a spacer ring out of cast acrylic. Once we cut the interior and exterior radii, we used a large-diameter cove router bit to profile the forward edge to ensure it would sit tightly against the door panel. We stretched black speaker cloth over the face of the spacer to perfectly replicate the factory look. A steel bracket securely mounts the new speaker assembly into the plastic door panel.
We removed the factory tweeters and installed the compact TNK inverted dome tweeter in the factory location. Focal includes provisions to remove the tweeter from its surface mount housing for just such an application.
Power On The Floor
The factory amplifier is mounted in a leather-wrapped pod under the center of the dash. We removed the factory amp and created an adapter place from 1/4-inch HDPE to allow us to install an incredibly compact Focal FD 4.350 four-channel amplifier in its place. We wrapped all of the wiring in cloth Tesa tape to ensure it would not buzz or vibrate and detract from the audio system.
Tune Up
With everything in place, we completed the installation by carefully adjusting the sensitivity controls on the amplifier to match the customer’s existing Kenwood radio. Proper tuning ensures the highest possible signal-to-noise ratio while still allowing the system to play to its full potential.

The client returned to Adrenaline Autosound and was thrilled that the audio system was now functional and sounded much better than it ever had. Music is now reproduced with more detail and accuracy – a trademark of a higher-quality speaker. The extra power from the Focal amplifier and increased excursion capability of the 165KR2 speakers also allows the system to play much louder without distortion.
