A client from Raleigh recently returned to Adrenaline Autosound to talk about upgrading his 2018 Volvo XC90 audio system. He was very happy with a previous project we had completed for him and wanted similar upgrades in his new car. Specifically, he wanted stronger and deeper bass, a well-defined soundstage and very natural tonal balance. He also wanted the vehicle to look as though we hadn’t made any changes or additions. After looking at the vehicle, we designed an upgrade plan that would deliver the performance improvements the client wanted.
Custom Subwoofer Enclosure and Amp Rack
The project started with constructing a somewhat complex subwoofer enclosure and amp rack. We added an angled front panel to the enclosure to allow the 13.5-inch JL Audio 13TW5v2-2 subwoofer to fit into the spare tire well while leaving enough room for the pair of amplifiers. The enclosure uses a combination of MDF panels and fiberglass to create the shape we required. Once finished, we wrapped the enclosure in black carpet so that it matches the floor of the trunk.
JL Audio System Processors and Amplifiers
The system uses a JL Audio TwK-88 signal processor to allow us to manipulate the factory sound system signals to work with the new amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers. We added an Audiomobile LDS-2 to the system to handle the high-output voltage of the factory subwoofer amplifier.
A JL Audio HD600/4 four-channel amp powers the tweeters and midrange drivers in the front of the vehicle while an HD900/5 amplifier powers the mid-bass drivers and the subwoofer in a three-channel configuration. The amplifiers are mounted on top of the enclosure and are easily accessible for tuning. We located the DSP and Audiomobile integration processor under the driver’s seat.
Audiofrog Front Stage Speaker Upgrade
We installed a set of Audiofrog GB-Series component speakers in the front of the vehicle to provide the client with the clarity, detail and sheer volume level capabilities he wanted. As with all of our installations, we always run new wires from the amplifiers to each speaker. In the case of this Volvo XC90 audio upgrade, the factory Molex connectors in the doors prevented us from adding wires, so we added a second set of rubber boots to the door jamb to protect the new wiring.
The Audiofrog GB60 woofers fit nicely into the factory speaker locations in the doors, and we added a foam acoustic coupling ring to help channel output from the driver to the vehicle interior. We followed up by installing GB25 2.5-inch midrange speakers and GB10-OE tweeters to complete the front stage upgrade. All of the signal and speaker wiring is wrapped in Tesa tape to keep it secure and prevent any buzzes or rattles.
Volvo XC90 Audio Upgrade Delivery
Once the system was tuned, it was time for the client to experience his sound system upgrade for the first time. He was impressed with the staging and loved the output of the subwoofer.
